Bibliography

Welcome! This is my current working bibliography for primary sources and secondary literature about Elisabeth Blochmann. The purpose of this document is both to share these resources with the wider world and to help me structure the material into a coherent narrative. Most of these sources are quite niche (and often lost) so I feel it is also important to provide more context. As a result, this is a fairly heavily annotated bibliography–most sources have a several pages of annotations, discussion, and analysis. If you would prefer a normal bibliography, I have created a public folder on Paperpile with all of my readings: https://paperpile.com/shared/wx7wwD.  If you would like to access particular material or have any recommendations, please e-mail me at clr.mcld@gmail.com or claire.macleod@theology.ox.ac.uk

Archives and Primary Sources

This project uses primary material from archives in Germany and in the United Kingdom. There is a considerable corpus of German scholarship on Blochmann which has made use of the unpublished material in Germany but the sources in Oxford have remained extant. The archives in Oxford offer the most significant contribution to our knowledge of her life and this study presents previously unpublished correspondence from Elisabeth Blochmann and her contemporaries.

p. 269 - At the village church the preaching pastor was inhibited by the organists, a sworn Nazi, prepared to spy and report. In the village lived the well-known writer Hans Grimm, who convinced Professor Nohl that he was anti-Nazi at heart and yet kept in with them sufficiently to be allowed freedom. My pupil, Farwell {Oriel, Oxford} (was staying with him to talk English, and he drew me into the problem of helping Grimm translate a heavy verbose lecture of his into English, which he meant to give somewhere in England. Grimm was obstinately insistent on keeping ever shade of every parenthesis in his involved sentences and would not believe that a literal translation would not be understood. I remember my struggles and remember his kindness in presenting me with his book “Volk Ohne Raum”. I never heard what happened to that impossible lecture on the greatness of the German spirit. I did not fall for Hans Grimm, but he had a very nice wife, a well-born lady whom he treated with dis-respect while she slaved for him. Professor Nohl managed to arrange for her to show me over a neighbouring town and between us we managed a days’ holiday for her.

Germany

The Deutsche Archiv states that Blochmann’s estate is held at two major archives.  If only if it were that simple. In truth, her affects are spread throughout a number of archives that funnel into either the BFO or the Ida Diligen Archive. Yet, her letters and correspondence are also held in the Heidegger Estate at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach.

Bibliothek für Bildungsgeschichtliche Forschung (BBF)

In stock mainly contains personal documents such as e.g. E.g. appointment documents, the awarding of the Goethe plaque and laudations for the 70th birthday. The private correspondence, which mainly consists of letters from and to her sister Annemarie Blochmann and two of her former students from Halle, makes up the largest part of the holdings. The documents were submitted to the archive in two partial deliveries (1997 and 2017). Further documents come from the estate of Wolfgang Klafki (2017). Indexing was carried out according to the RNA (rules for the indexing of estates and autographs) in the archive database. additional archive material:
